Finding the sound that fits your day

A quartet fills a ballroom; a duo is better in a small chapel. Here is what each formation sounds like, so you can picture it in your venue. If you already have something else in mind, tell us.

String ensembles

  • Most requested

    String Quartet

    The classic choice, and the one most people picture when they imagine strings at a ceremony. Four voices that blend into something bigger than the sum of them.

    Two violins, one viola and one cello. It is a very versatile formation that fits both classical and popular music, and it can sound traditional or modern depending only on what we play. An elegant choice for almost any occasion.

  • Deeper sound

    String Quintet

    If you love the sound of a quartet but want more depth — lower than the cello can go — this is it. A quartet plus a double bass.

    The larger range enriches everything, traditional and modern alike. It does need more room, so it is not the best fit for a small chapel.

  • Intimate

    String Trio

    For intimate rooms. Either two violins and a cello, or violin, viola and cello.

    It does not sound as full as a quartet, but it is still versatile — and it fits beautifully where a quartet would feel crowded.

  • Smallest option

    String Duo

    The most intimate option. Two violins, or violin and cello.

    The repertoire is more limited than for a trio, but for a small ceremony or a quiet dinner it can be exactly right.

  • With harp or piano

    Violin & Harp or Violin & Piano

    One of the most requested combinations for ceremonies. A solo violin with harp or with piano carries beautifully in a chapel and reads as elegant without needing a large ensemble.

    Both work as well for classical repertoire as for arrangements of popular songs.
